Berenice Abbott (1898–1991), born in Springfield, Ohio, is recognized for her rigorous and analytical approach to reality, particularly in relation to urban transformation and the modern landscape. After a period of training and work in Paris during the 1920s, where she came into contact with the avant-garde artistic scene and figures such as Man Ray, she initially approached photography through a Surrealist influence. However, her interest gradually shifted toward a more objective and direct representation of reality. Back in the United States, she undertook an important project documenting the city of New York, supported by the Works Progress Administration. The series Changing New York captures the profound urban and social transformations of the city, through images characterized by formal clarity and a strong attention to architectural detail. Her approach is based on essential compositions and a sharp, precise vision, aiming to reveal the structure of the modern world without interpretative mediation. Alongside her photographic work, Abbott was also engaged in scientific dissemination and the development of innovative photographic techniques.
