Boris Mikhailov (born in 1938 in Kharkiv) is a contemporary Ukrainian photographer. He is recognized for his raw and provocative images documenting post-Soviet society.
After studying engineering and photography, Mikhailov began working as an independent photographer, developing a personal visual language characterized by strong social realism, often combined with irony and political critique. His work explores themes such as poverty, marginalization, everyday life, and urban decay.
His works highlight the difficulties and contradictions of life in post-Soviet Ukraine, portraying ordinary people in highly realistic and sometimes unsettling contexts. His photographs are distinguished by the direct use of light, incisive compositions, and an unfiltered approach that challenges aesthetic and moral conventions.
