Cindy Sherman (born in 1954 in Glen Ridge) is an American photographer and artist. Her work develops through conceptual projects focused on identity, portraiture, and the representation of social and cultural roles.
After studying visual arts at the State University of New York, Buffalo, Sherman developed a unique visual language in which she becomes the subject of her own photographs, using costumes, makeup, and staged settings to question stereotypes and social conventions.
She is best known for the series Untitled Film Stills (1977–1980), in which she recreates images that evoke cinematic clichés and female roles, exploring the artificiality of representation and the construction of identity.
Her work combines photography, performance, and social critique, profoundly influencing contemporary photography and conceptual art practices.
