Edward Steichen (1879–1973), born in Luxembourg, was an American photographer, painter, and curator. His work is distinguished by innovation in portraiture, fashion photography, and documentary photography.
After moving to the United States, he studied painting at the Art Students League of New York before fully dedicating himself to photography. His images reveal a strong interest in light and composition, which he uses with a painterly sensitivity, creating elegant and refined photographs.
In addition to his artistic practice, Steichen played a crucial role as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where he organized major exhibitions, including The Family of Man (1955), one of the most influential photographic exhibitions of the 20th century.
His work spans various fields, from fashion to military photography, from portraiture to artistic experimentation, combining aesthetic research with technical innovation.
